About

Philippe Peycam is the director of the International Institute of Asian Studies (IIAS), Leiden, where he also supervises the transnational program “Humanities across Borders, Asia and Africa in the World” (2017-2021). A trained historian of South East Asia (Vietnam), he obtained is Ph.D. from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), London. Before his appointment at the IIAS, Peycam worked as the Founding Director of the Center for Khmer Studies, Southeast Asia’s first American Overseas Research Center, based in Cambodia. He was a United States Institute of Peace’s Jenning Randolph Fellow and a Visiting Research Fellow at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies in Singapore. His academic interests lie in modern Vietnam and Southeast Asia. Peycam is currently working on a book provisionally entitled "Cultural Renewal and Social Ruins: Reflections on Post-Conflict Cambodia". 

Major publications include:

Cultural Renewal in Cambodia (2020); The Birth of Vietnamese Political Journalism, Saigon, 1916-30 (2012); Intellectuals and political commitment in Vietnam: the emergence of a public sphere in colonial Saigon, 1916-1928 (1999).
