Thomas Ertl is professor in High and Late Medieval History at the Friedrich Meinecke Institute of the Free University of Berlin since October 2018. Prior to this, he was professor of Social and Economic History of the Middle Ages at the University of Vienna (2011-2018). He received his doctorate in 1999 from the University of Vienna, and his habilitation in 2006 from the Free University of Berlin (title: "Self Interpretation and World Order in the Early Franciscan Order"). His research focuses on the social and economic history of Europe from ca. 1000 to 1500 and the interconnectedness of the world before 1800. He is a member of the Constance Working Group for Medieval History and co-editor of the Vierteljahrschrift für Sozial- und Wirtschaftsgeschichte / Journal of Social and Economic History.
