General Information

The contracts of all the Cluster's doctoral students, whether they are affiliated with the GPTS or the specific projects, are limited to two years with an optional one-year extension. The decision regarding the extension lies with the Cluster's Steering Committee, and is based on an evaluation of the doctoral student's performance.

Evaluation Process

Doctoral students present their research progress to the Steering Committee through the Online Evaluation System. They need to provide the following:

- information on attended conferences and/or workshops; papers presented; publications in-print and/or launched co-operations
- an extensive, provisional draft of the thesis outline and a writing sample that illustrates the analytical and logical approach as well as the progress of the project

An Evaluation Group, consisting of five members of the Steering Committee, bases its decision on this dossier and a recommendation by the supervisor. The result of of the voting is arrived at by majority, i.e. at least three positive votes are required for a direct extension of the contract. All other cases are finally decided in a separate meeting.

Evaluation Criteria

The decision regarding the extension mainly depends on the following aspects:

- The status of the doctoral project clearly suggests that the doctoral thesis can be completed by the end of the extension.
- The theoretical and methodological approach of the doctoral project contributes to and complements the Cluster's general research agenda.
- The doctoral student proves active engagement with the scholarly community outside the Cluster.
