Doctoral Students

Since its inception in 2008, seven generations of doctoral candidates have successfully completed the Graduate Programme for Transcultural Studies (GPTS). A further three cohorts with overall 19 doctoral candidates are currently active in the programme.

All GPTS members go through a rigorous selection process. We usually receive around 15 applications for every scholarship position, for example, 90 applications for six scholarships in 2018. Candidates first submit a written application. The most promising candidates are invited to a Job Market in Heidelberg consisting of presentations in a conference-like setting and individual interviews.

Our doctoral students represent a variety of nationalities but also disciplinary backgrounds. Just in our three current generations, we have students from India, China, the USA, Nepal, South Korea, Russia, Canada as well as from Italy, Sweden, Bosnia-Herzegovina and, of course, Germany. Their range of academic backgrounds is equally impressive, including Anthropology, Art History, Chinese Studies, Communication Studies, Educational Sciences, History, Japanese Studies, Literary Studies, Museum Studies, Philosophy, and Transcultural Studies.
