The Graduate Programme for Transcultural Studies (GPTS) currently has 27 doctoral students. In fall 2011 eight more will join in. In three highly competitive rounds of applications 13, 16, and eight doctoral students were selected out of roughly 170 applicants each round to pursue their studies in the GPTS. Two have left the programme early to take up promising positions elsewhere, while finishing the doctoral studies as affiliates of the GPTS.

The variety of nationalities as well as of disciplinary background of the doctoral students is impressive. Students have come from as far as Japan, China, Taiwan, India, Bangladesh, Russia, Egypt, and from several countries in the EU. Their academic background includes Indology, Japanese Studies and Sinology, Anthropology, Political Science, Art History and Theatre History, International Health, Media Informatics and Communication, as well as Social Sciences and Study of Religion.
