Cultivating Futures
Ethnographies of Alternative Agricultures in (South) Asian Landscapes of Crisis

This workshop brings together ethnographic studies of contemporary experiments, innovations and initiatives in South Asian agriculture. Focusing on emerging alternative farming practices, scholars from the fields of anthropology, human geography, political ecology, rural sociology, economics and agrarian studies examine transcultural dynamics in the interplay of knowledge, technologies, power and economics. Contemporary agro-ecological uncertainty (debates about decreasing agro-biodiversity and fertility, genetically modified seed, pollution of soils and water, etc.) instigates the exploration of alternative agricultures.
Drawing from theoretical impulses at the interface of science & technology studies, agrarian political economy and environmental anthropology, the workshop explores how these multi-layered experiments may contribute to the equitable and sustainable reworking of economic and environmental relations.
