Tamboti - Metadata Framework
Tamboti is the Excellence Cluster's main collection ecosystem and metadata framework. It was developed by the Heidelberg Research Architecture (HRA) and allows users to create, organize, share and publish metadata records on intellectual and artistic works and their interrelations, e.g. bibliographical entries describing publications or catalogs or detailing cultural objects or collections of works of art.
Metadata collections from the Cluster's many digital resources are continually being integrated into Tamboti. Bibliographic information on text resources was the first type of metadata to be integrated using MODS and, with Ziziphus, an image metadata editor plugin producing VRA Core 4 metadata has been added. Support for the Cluster's audio and video resources are under development. Tamboti is released as an Open Source Software Package for existDB.

How can this resource be used in teaching, studying and research?
Tamboti's granular access control allows users to pursue collaborative research in clearly defined groups closed to others, before making resources available to the public. This allows discussion and supervision before a decision is taken to go public.
Tamboti's theming and embedding functionality provides users with the possibility of presenting collection metadata resources in the context of their project's website. The look and feel as well as the functionality provided to website visitors can easily be customized to the project's needs.
Metadata records are stored in highly descriptive Metadata Schema. The Metadata Object Description Schema (MODS) developed by the Library of Congress is mostly used for bibliographic records. The VRA Core 4 Standard is used for image metadata, allowing researchers to annotate works independently from their digital image representations. In addition, Tamboti is capable of searching through full text corpora encoded in Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) format.
These standard formats allow researchers to enrich their digital resources with multilingual metadata, a feature crucial to the creation of sustainable digital resources within transcultural studies. It also provides a framework for contextualizing resources across disciplines.
By connecting Tamboti to existDB’s Atomic Wiki, the HyperImage image annotation environment, Pandora video annotation database and Zotero, HRA and its partners are creating new possibilities for collaborative research.
