Focus
During this phase of the project, the relationship between photography together with the entertainment newspaper and the rise of the female impersonator formed the main focus of study. Photography as a new form of technology impacted not only the way stars are seen but also Peking opera itself. The entertainment newspaper explores the potential of photos and try to promote an particular type of star image. The dan actor with their patrons at the same time explore both the medium of photography and the entertainment newspaper for self-promotion.
- During the early Republican period, literati moved their literary field into the newspaper and with it their love poems for young dan actors found a new public medium (image: the cultural page of Asia Daily, October 25, 1912, “The Literary Garden” (wen yuan 文苑”, p.3).
