Workshop | Keynotes | Preparatory Readings

November 7 - 9, 2014

Karl Jaspers Centre for Advanced Transcultural Studies

Cluster of Excellence Asia and Europe in a Global Context at Heidelberg University

Room 212

The workshop forms the inaugural meeting for the new working group “Evangelical, Pentecostal and Charismatic Movements” of the German Association for the Study of Religion (DVRW). The working group intends to further academic exchange in this research field and to bring together scholars with similar research foci from the field of religious studies and neighbouring disciplines.

The keynote lectures are held by two proven experts in the field of Evangelical, Pentecostal and charismatic Christianity. Prof. Simon Coleman (University of Toronto, Canada) and Dr. James S. Bielo (Miami University, Oxford, OH) will approach the workshop‘s topic in a twofold way: on the one hand addressing theoretical as well as methodological concerns and, on the other, discussing those concerns with reference to their specific research.

In workshop sessions following the keynotes, both speakers will invite the participants to discuss the topics presented in more depth. Both speakers provided reading suggestions in preparation of the workshop session.
In addition, members of the working group will present current research projects in short paper sessions on Saturday. On Sunday, members of the working group will discuss the conceptual and directional aim of the working group as well as future meetings and projects.

The workshop is jointly organised by Junior Research Group B21 “Transcultural Dynamics of Pentecostalism” and the new DVRW working group “Evangelical, Pentecostal and Charismatic Movements.”
