Academic Writing in English (MATS)

This semester-long course offers concrete guidelines and practical strategies for composing and editing academic texts in English at the MA level. It aims to educate students in the tried-and-true methods of essay writing, which students will apply practically in writing and developing a research paper. The course is designed specifically for students who are not native speakers of English, and aims to support students in formulating a thesis statement and structuring an essay. It also encourages students to incorporate and convey the significance of sources, to write analytically and clearly, and to articulate their ideas in English with stylistic and grammatical precision.

Writing Retreat "Academic Writing in English" (doctoral students/GPTS)

During this three-day writing retreat in the Palatinate hills, our GPTS members receive concrete guidelines and practical strategies on writing their dissertation in English. Built on the same principle as the MA course, the focus lies on structure and language with a special emphasis on writing in English as a second language. The aim is to combine a discussion of structural fundamentals (from thesis development to paragraph construction) with linguistic tactics for non-native authors. The workshop tackles the mechanical preparation of a manuscript, including issues of coherence, style, effective source-usage, and referencing, with a view to successfully compete in the English-language publishing market.

Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on Academic Writing in English

In 2014 Andrea Hacker and Jule Nowoitnick from the Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe in a Global Context” at Heidelberg University made a successful funding bid for a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) project with the working title: “Erstellung eines MOOCs Academic Essay Writing in English for the Humanities and Social Sciences;” (Creating a MOOC about Academic Essay Writing in English). The funding for this project came from the Ministerium für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Kunst Baden-Württemberg (Ministry of Science, Research and Arts).

The aim was to create a course that is free and open to everyone, anywhere. Therefore, the principle underlying the entire course was to use open source material—from the intended hosting platform (Open edX) to CC-BY content and open source fonts.

The course was designed for international students, whose native language is not English but who, due to the increase in international degree-courses, need help with the basic skill of formulating research papers in English.

The developed course features seven modules guiding students through the process of writing an academic essay in English: from finding sources to finishing a structured essay. It includes original videos and open source research tools, interactive exercises and peer-review tasks, as well as social media tools and forum options.

The developed materials are currently being tested in the course Academic Writing in English.
