About Lisa Caviglia

Lisa Caviglia holds a Bachelor of Science in Medical Biochemistry (King's College London, UK) and a Master of Science in International Health (Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin). Her interest in anthropology grew from her long term work in Asia. Between 2001 and 2002 she was based in Nepal, running development projects in a remote rural area. From 2005 till 2006 she carried out research in Mongolia focusing on young girls and women engaging in sex work in the capital, Ulan Bator. The study was conducted in cooperation with the German Agency for Technical Cooperation (GTZ) and the project was the launching point for a deeper interest in sexual exchange for profit. Between 2008 and 2011 she was a PhD canditate and scholarship holder of the Graduate Programme for Transcultural Studies of the Cluster of Excellence Asia and Europe. During this time she conducted extensive research on the sex trade in Kathmandu. In 2011, Lisa took on a position as Project Assistant in the postgraduate programme "International Health" of the Charité, in Berlin, whilst concominantly finalising her PhD dissertation. She successfully defended her thesis, titled "Sex [at] work in Kathmandu. Discourses around sexuality, self-perception and society", in April 2014. Lisa is currently employed at the Humboldt University, Berlin as Lecturer, Researcher as well as Coordinator of the "Global and Area Studies" programme.
