About Sungwoo Kang

Dr. Kang, a scholar of Korea-Japan relations, received his DPhil from University of Oxford in 2012.   In his thesis entitled ‘Colonizing the Port City Pusan in Korea: A study of the process of Japanese domination in the urban space of Pusan during the open-port period (1876-1910)’, he attempted to analyze the transformation of local community Pusan by examining the social, political, economic, and cultural changes during the open-port period (1876-1910). 

 

Since May 2012, he worked as postdoctoral fellow in Cluster of Excellence at University of Heidelberg (C 12 Asian Sea). As a postdoctoral fellow at Heidelberg, he plans to revise his thesis for publication as journal papers and a book.
