About Birgit Hopfener

Birgit Hopfener is an art historian and sinologist who focuses on Chinese art history as well as transcultural issues in art historical methodology and artistic research. She is currently a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the Free University in Berlin. Before she was adjunct professor for the Histories of China at Heidelberg University and assistant professor at the department of East Asian Art History at Free University Berlin.
In her post-doc-project granted by the German Science Foundation she examines the cultural and historical conditions of Sun Yuan’s und Peng Yu’s art between performative enlivenment and iconic representation in transcultural perspective.  
Her most recent publication is the book she edited together with Franziska Koch et al. “Negotiating Difference. Contemporary Chinese Art in the Global Context”. In February 2013 her PhD thesis will be published at transcript publishing house entitled “Installationskunst in China. Transkulturelle Reflexionsräume einer Genealogie des Performativen.
Birgit Hopfener is also an active curator and art writer. Her articles on contemporary art with a focus on art from China have been published widely in artnet magazine, Yishu, Texte zur Kunst, Leap and she has among others. curated shows for the ZKM, Goethe-Institute Hongkong and Beijing, the Edith-Ruß-Haus in Oldenburg and the OCAT art terminal in Shenzhen.
