Current project

The importance of the Silk Road, the network of trading routes stretching from the Mediterranean to China for trade, as well as the spread of cultural practices and intellectual products such as Buddhism, is widely recognized. As the gateway to China on the east-west route of the Silk road, Dunhuang was an important Buddhist centre and a meeting place for Buddhist pilgrims from India, Tibet and China. This project focuses on a relatively short, but complete, paper manuscript, one of the approximately 100 Tibetan vinaya manuscripts found in the Dunhuang “Library cave” that have so far received little scholarly attention.
