Monica Juneja in Magazine of Cultural Foundation

Feb 21, 2017

In November 2016, Prof. Monica Juneja, Chair of “Global Art History”, published the article “Jenseits der Glaswand. Museen der Moderne und die Herausforderung der Globalität“ in the 27th issue of the Magazine of the German Federal Cultural Foundation.

The article is entitled “Jenseits der Glaswand. Museen der Moderne und die Herausforderung der Globalität“, and takes the reader on an excursion through the early history of modern art, critically reviewing the great modern art collections along the axis Paris-Berlin-Vienna and New York, where neither non European modern art nor the eastern European Avantgarde have found any recognition. The question is raised: Which challenges surround the new perspectivation of art – and art history - towards modernity under the sings of the global turn for museum methods of exhibition and collections?

In her article Prof. Monica Juneja calls for a revision of the old museum concepts, categorizations and quality criteria towards a more reflected, global and transcultural approach. A process that has been present in many anthropological collections and was lately attempted by the Centre Pompidou in 2013. Though this still remains a breach of taboo for many of the renowned modern art collections, these current boundaries should be crossed.

The Magazine of the Federal Cultural Foundation is a biannual publication which offers a multifaceted view of the current activities of the Federal Cultural Foundation. The issues offer descriptions of currently funded projects and programes, accompanied by essays by international writers, interviews, photo spreads and literary texts.

Prof. Monica Juneja holds the professorship of "Global Art History" at the Heidelberg Center for Transcultural Studies (HCTS).
