Workshop on the Making of a MOOC

Nov 11, 2014

The Cluster "Asia and Europe" was hosting a workshop on the production of a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC). The one-day programme "Behind the Scenes: The Making of a MOOC" was held on Friday, November 7, at the Karl Jaspers Centre. It was organised by Dr. Andrea Hacker and Jule Nowoitnick.

Specifically, the workshop addressed the challenges that we face during the process of building MOOCs: from tried and tested teaching methods and approaches to student assessment, to harnessing digital technologies in the production of MOOCs and the development of an adequate and self-sustaining business model for MOOCs within an institutional setting. The participants discussed their experiences of producing, developing or financing online courses for a global audience, addressing the successes and the stumbling blocks that they have encountered. As a result, the workshop brought us closer to understanding what it means for a MOOC to be successful, how this success can be achieved and how it can thereby contribute to the development of higher education both within Europe and globally.

The workshop was organised by Dr. Andrea Hacker, managing editor, and Jule Nowoitnick, Graduate Programme manager, who recently received funding from the Baden-W├╝rttemberg Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts to develop a MOOC on behalf of the Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe".
