Workshop on Modernity and Urbanity in Europe and China

"Modernity and Urbanity in Europe and China" was the title of a workshop taking place on February 5 at Heidelberg's Old University (Senatsaal). It was held on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the University's partnership with Nankai University. The workshop was organised by the International Relations Office together with Prof. Dr. Barbara Mittler.

The workshop featured talks by scholars from Heidelberg and from Nankai University. They discussed topics such as "Urbanisation Past and Present", "Governing Urbanisation", or "Gendering Urbanisation". Among others, archaeologist Prof. Diamantis Panagiotopoulos (Heidelberg) spoke about monumental buildings in the ancient Mediterranean and Prof. Yuan Xin (Nankai), professor of population economics, addressed the rural to urban temporary migration and urbanisation in China. The workshop was moderated by Prof. Dr. Barbara Mittler (Heidelberg), Chair of Chinese Studies and Director of the Cluster "Asia and Europe".

The workshop was held on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Heidelberg-Nankai Partnership. The anniversary programme also included an exhibition on the Nankai University in the foyer of the new University building that ran from February 1 to 6.
