Tasveer Ghar Book "Visual Homes, Image Worlds"

"Visual Homes, Image Worlds" is the title of a new book edited by Prof. Dr. Christiane Brosius, Prof. Dr. Sumathi Ramaswamy and Yousuf Saeed. The publication is another result of the collaborative transnational enterprise "Tasveer Ghar".

This book brings together fascinating essays that take the reader through the everyday and exceptional worlds constituted by Indian popular visual culture. The authors represented here, amongst the leading authorities on the subject, take on for due consideration genres ranging from mass-produced print to photography and film in order to explore how the dynamics of affect and belief, patriotism and love, consumption and urbanization, animate the vibrant world of Indian popular pictures.

Contributors to the publication include Shirley Abraham, Catherine B Asher, Kajri Jain, Christiane Brosius, Richard Davis, Sandria Freitag, Sabeena Gadihoke, Abigail McGowan, Annapurna Garimella, Roos Gerritsen, Stephen Inglis, Philip Lutgendorf, Amit Madheshiya, Arvind Rajagopal, Sumathi Ramaswamy,Vishal Rawlley, Yousuf Saeed, Shaswati Talukdar, Rosie Thomas, and Patricia Uberoi. The book is published by Yoda Press, New Delhi, in early 2015.

Founded in 2006 by the editors of this volume as a collaborative transnational digital enterprise, Tasveer Ghar ("the House of Pictures") is a trans-national virtual site for collecting, digitizing, and documenting various materials produced by South Asia’s exciting popular visual sphere. It has received funding from the Cluster of Excellence with respect to the digitisation of the vast Priya Paul Collection (to be found on Tamboti)  as well as the HRA-related project Visual Pilgrim and the online volume South Asia's Islamic Shrines and Transcultural Visuality edited by Yousuf Saeed and Christiane Brosius in 2013.

Christiane Brosius holds the Chair of Visual and Media Anthropology at the Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe in a Global Context". Sumathi Ramaswamy is Professor of History at Duke University, Durham, USA, and a member of the Cluster's Advisory Board. Yousuf Saeed is an independent filmmaker and researcher based in Delhi.
