Thomas Maissen joins Balzan Prize Committee

Dec 21, 2013

Prof. Dr. Thomas Maissen, former director of the Cluster "Asia and Europe", becomes a member of the General Prize Committee of the Balzan Prize Foundation. The Balzan Prize is awarded each year to promote culture and the sciences.

As member of the General Prize Committee, Prof. Maissen will be involved in the decision of the yearly changing academic fields, in which the prize is being awarded, and in the decision about the prizewinners. Currently, four annual awards are made: two in literature, moral sciences and the arts; and two in the physical, mathematical and natural sciences and medicine. Every third year, a special prize for Humanity, Peace and Fraternity among Peoples is awarded.

The International Balzan Prize Foundation promotes culture, the sciences and the most meritorious initiatives in the cause of humanity, peace and fraternity among peoples throughout the world. The Balzan Foundation acts jointly through two Foundations: one with headquarters in Milan and the other with headquarters in Zurich. The foundation is named after Eugenio Francesco Balzan. He was born in 1874 into a family of landowners and spent almost his entire working life at Milan’s leading daily newspaper, Corriere della Sera. His daughter decided to use this wealth to honour his memory.

Prof. Dr. Thomas Maissen was Director of the Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe" until August 2013. Since September, he is Director of the German Historical Institute in Paris. He holds the Chair for Early Modern History at the University of Heidelberg where he is also Member of the Heidelberger Akademie der Wissenschaften.
