SAI-Award for Julia Poerting

Dec 02, 2013

Julia Poerting, PhD student of Junior Research Group "Agrarian Alternatives", received the SAI-Award 2013 for her master's thesis. The prize is awarded by the South Asia Institute (SAI) of Heidelberg University for outstanding theses of SAI graduates.

In her rewarded master's thesis in the field of Geography, Julia Poerting examined the Swat conflict in Northern Pakistan. She focused on its causes and contexts of vulnerability. The described conflict between Islamic fundamentalists and the Pakistani state power escalated since 2007 and developed in 2009 to an open war. Julia Poerting combines her own empirical work with a profound literary review to a very convincing argumentation.

After completing the master's degree at the SAI, Julia Poerting began her doctoral studies at the Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe" in April this year. As a member of Junior Research Group "Agrarian Alternatives", led by Dr. Daniel Münster, she analyses now how the global model of certified organic agriculture articulates with existing forms of cultivation in Pakistan. Her thesis is titled "Certifying Futures? Knowledge, Practices and Governance of Organic Agriculture in Pakistan".

The SAI-Award 2013 was awarded on October 24 to SAI students from various disciplines. Besides Julia Poerting, Anna-Lena Wolf (Anthropology) and Almut Büchsel (History) have been honored for their thesis. The SAI is one of the key partners of the Cluster "Asia and Europe".
