New Heinrich Zimmer Chair: Prof. Amiya Prosad Sen

Prof. Amiya Prosad Sen is appointed to the Heinrich Zimmer Chair for Indian Philosophy and Intellectual History. The historian focuses primarily on the intellectual and cultural history of Modern India and he has published widely on Hinduism as well as biographical studies on eminent Indian historical figures.

Prof. Sen took his undergraduate and graduate degrees in history from St. Stephen's College, University of Delhi. After a brief career in the civil services, he served at the University of Delhi and as professor of modern Indian history at the Department of History & Culture at the Jamia Millia Islamia University, New Delhi. Prof. Sen was Agatha Harrison Fellow at the University of Oxford, Fellow at the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla, and at the Centre for Contemporary Studies, Nehru Memorial Museum & Library, New Delhi. Currently, he is Heinrich Zimmer Chair, South Asia Institute, Heidelberg. Prof. Sen has produced 12 books, mostly published by Oxford University Press, Delhi, Penguin Viking and Permanent Black.

The Heinrich Zimmer Chair for Indian Philosophy and Intellectual History is the first professorship in Germany awarded by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations - the country's highest-ranking institution for the promotion of international cultural exchanges. The chair is integrated into the Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe in a Global Context” as well as into the South Asia Institute at the Ruperto Carola. Prof. Sen is the third chairholder since the inauguration of the position in 2010.
