Welcome of New MA Students

Oct 20, 2015

A batch of new students has started their study in the Master Programme of Transcultural Studies at the Karl Japers Centre. The orientation days took place in October, introducing them to the study foci, programme structure, and regulations.

At the first welcoming session, the scientific project manager Oliver Lamers gave the students an introduction to the Cluster "Asia and Europe", as well as the MA’s aims and structure. The programme coordinators Jule Nowoitnick, Shupin Lang, and Marian Gallenkamp guided the students through the steps of their first semester. Also, the student representatives talked about their work and welcomed the new arrivals. At the second welcoming session, the students met the HCTS Professors, and the Focus Advisers introduced the study foci of the programme.

The courses offered in this semester cover a wide range of topics such as philosophical encounters between Asia and Europe (Joachim Kurtz),  visual cultures and the practice of looking (Cathrine Bublatzky), global economic history (Steven Ivings), migration and Muslims (Sophie Roche), agrarian frontiers (Daniel Münster), and ethnic formation (Daniel König).

The M.A. Transcultural Studies is a two-year full-time programme. The students will select one study focus of the following: "Society, Economy and Governance", "Knowledge, Belief and Religion", or "Visual, Media and Material Culture".  In the first two semesters they will attend seminars and lectures which will introduce them to the methods and theories of Transcultural Studies. The third semester may be used as a mobility window; while the forth semester is spent writing the master thesis.

Since the M.A. in Transcultural Studies started at the Cluster in 2011, it has attracted growing interest from around the world. This has resulted in about numerous applications from Germany and abroad this year.

You can find more information on the M.A. Transcultural Studies website.
