India's Ambassador inaugurated Heinrich Zimmer Chair

India's Ambassador to Germany, His Excellency Sudhir Vyas, inaugurated the Chair for Indian Philosophy and Intellectual History. Subsequently, the first holder of the Heinrich Zimmer Chair, Prof. Dhruv Raina, held his Inaugural Lecture. The live stream was followed around the globe.

On Monday, the Heinrich Zimmer Chair for Indian Philosophy and Intellectual History was inaugurated at Heidelberg University. At the opening, University Rector Prof. Dr. Bernhard Eitel and His Excellency Sudhir Vyas gave welcome speeches. Subsequently, Cluster Co-Director Prof. Dr. Axel Michaels and South Asia Institute Director Prof. Dr. Marcus Nüsser introduced Prof. Dhruv Raina and his work. Under the title "The Impossible Dream of Needham´s Indian Apostle", Prof. Raina then pointed out that the Indian Scientific History of the 1950s could have taken a different direction and highlighted UNESCO's role in this context.

The ceremonial opening of the Heinrich Zimmer Chair was held at the Alte Aula, Heidelberg University. But it was also followed at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, Max Mueller Bhavan and other partner institutions in India. The lecture was broadcasted live from the Alte Aula around the globe and was mentioned on various platforms.

The Heinrich Zimmer Chair is the first professorship in Germany awarded by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations - the country's highest-ranking institution for the promotion of international cultural exchanges. The chair is integrated into the Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe in a Global Context” as well as into the South Asia Institute at the Ruperto Carola.
