HCTS welcomes Applications for Fellowships

Jan 14, 2015

The Heidelberg Centre for Transcultural Studies (HCTS) welcomes applications for fellowships starting on October 1, 2015.

The HCTS is an Institute for Advanced Studies at the University of Heidelberg. Building on the structures established by the Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe in a Global Context,” it is open to scholars especially in the Humanities and the Social Sciences. Founded in April 2013, the HCTS assembles scholars from all over the world to engage in an interdisciplinary dialogue and to enhance their understanding of transcultural processes. The Centre offers a Master’s and a Doctoral Programme in Transcultural Studies.

In addition to five permanent fellows, a group of senior and junior fellows is invited each year to join the HCTS to pursue their own research and to engage in discussions with other fellows and graduate students around a common theme. Fellows will be in residence in Heidelberg for a period ranging from six up to twelve months.

Starting in October 2015, the HCTS offers the following fellowships:
•    Up to four visiting fellowships to scholars worldwide
•    Up to two senior internal fellowships to scholars from Heidelberg University
•    Up to two junior internal fellowships to postdocs from Heidelberg University

Fellows at the HCTS are invited to pursue their own research, with a suggested focus on the themed initiative:

"In the name of Truth and Justice" – The violence of universalisms

Who can apply?
Researchers working on all historical periods, all regions of the world and from all relevant disciplinary backgrounds are encouraged to apply and to develop new, innovative ways to pursue their research from a transcultural perspective. Fellowships are awarded to scholars employed within (senior and junior fellows) or outside (visiting fellows) of Heidelberg University who have demonstrated outstanding scholarly achievement and exhibit unusual intellectual promise. Fellowships will be awarded on the strength of a candidate's proposed research project, the relationship of the project to the themed initiative, the candidate's scholarly record, and the candidate's ability to contribute to intellectual life at the HCTS.

What we offer
Fellows benefit from finest research facilities, a stimulating environment of a multi-disciplinary and international community of first-rate scholars, and an excellent digital humanities unit.

All Fellows will be offered the support of research assistants and library services. Senior Internal Fellows will receive funds for the partial reduction of their teaching load (equivalent to 1/2 "Lehrstuhlvertretung"). Junior Internal Fellows will receive a budget to reduce their teaching load ("Lehrauftrag"). Visiting Fellows will receive a stipend based on the rates of the German Research Foundation (DFG) to make up for losses in (sabbatical) salary and for additional costs incurred by their stay in Germany.

Fellowship terms
Fellows must be in residence in Heidelberg during their fellowship so that they can interact with one another and participate actively in the regular working meetings. During their stay at the HCTS, fellows are obliged to attend all HCTS events. Junior internal fellows should offer at least one course or workshop related to their research project at the HCTS for doctoral students during one academic year. Visiting and senior internal fellows are also encouraged to do so.
