Funding for new Project by Christiane Brosius

Jan 22, 2014

A new project by Cluster members Prof. Dr. Christiane Brosius and Marie Sander on "Mobile Spaces: Urban everyday practices in transcultural perspective" will be funded by Heidelberg University's Field of Focus 3. The one-year project will start in April 2014 in cooperation with Prof. Dr. Ulrike Gerhard and Prof. Dr. Beatrix Busse, and enhances the recently founded Forum "Urban Spaces".

The project "Mobile Spaces" is grounded in three disciplinary fields – Human Geography, Linguistics and Media Anthropology – and based on the members’ different regional expertise. It aims to develop and promote new perspectives for the study of urban everyday practices. Conceptualizing the specific urban spaces of the individual research fields in Asia, Europe and North America as genuinely transcultural phenomena, the project explores in which ways experiences and understandings of cities of the ‘global South’ and the ‘global North’ can be brought together. It probes if transculturality as concept and method allows for new ways to look at mobilities in cities and to critically examine everyday practices in different regional contexts under the influences of globalization and neoliberalization.

The new project is funded by the Field of Focus 3 "Cultural Dynamics in Globalised Worlds" of Heidelberg University in line with its institutional strategy. In the future, it seeks to enable further collaborative projects in urban studies to promote urbanity and urbanization as a transdisciplinary research focus at Heidelberg University with a high interest in further networking within and outside of the university, supporting junior scholarship and promoting research-based teaching. Thus, it will also be part of the Forum "Urban Spaces" that was founded in September 2013, initiated by the Chair of Visual and Media Anthropology to connect scholars across various disciplines interested in processes of urbanization.

The project "Mobile Spaces" is coordinated by Prof. Christiane Brosius, Chair of Visual and Media Anthropology, Marie Sander, coordinator of the Forum "Urban Spaces", Prof. Ulrike Gerhard, professor for Human Geography of North America, and Prof. Beatrix Busse, Chair of English Linguistics, all from Heidelberg University.
