Forum Discussion: Storm on the Images

Feb 04, 2015

The attacks on the newsroom of Charlie Hebdo are the reason for a forum discussion with the Cluster members Prof. Dr. Monica Juneja und Prof. Dr. Henry Keazor. The event took place at the Institute for European Art History on Wednesday, February 4.

On January 7, 2015, two armed men stormed the newsroom of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and killed several of their employees. The gunmen wanted to take revenge for cartoons allegedly insulting their religion.

These events have widely sparked religious and political discussions, which also concern artists and art historians. The problem is related to the production and destruction of images in the context of a globalized world. It therefore seems relevant or even necessary, to organize a public forum for students and lecturers to discuss about these issues. Kicking off with a number of short statements by Prof. Monica Juneja, Prof. Henry Keazor and other speakers, the following topics were addressed:

  • Charlie Hebdo: A French tradition of caricature?
  • Storm of the images, caricatures, and self-censorship
  • Prohibition of images and Iconoclasm in Islam
  • Titanic: a German Hara-Kiri?

The event was organized by the institute's student organization (Fachschaft IEK Heidelberg) and the Student Congress on Art History (KSK Heidelberg 2014/15 - 87. Kunsthistorischer Studierendenkongress).
