New Issue of the Cluster’s E-Journal

Jan 10, 2014

A new issue of the e-journal Transcultural Studies is now available. It features articles by scholars from Canada, Germany, Israel and the United Kingdom.

The issue opens with “From Theology's Handmaid to the Science of Sciences” by Ori Sela. The paper analyses the various ways in which philosophy transformed in the West from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century, thereby making it appealing to Chinese scholars. The second paper, by Yue Zhuang, is titled “‘Luxury’ and ‘the Surprising’ in Sir William Chambers’ Dissertation on Oriental Gardening (1772)”. It examines oriental landscape scenes of “luxury” and of “the surprising” as described by Sir William Chambers, and analyses them in relation to Edmund Burke’s theory of the sublime and the beautiful. In “Sites of ‘Disconnectedness’”, Mio Wakita takes the tourist photography industry in Yokohama as an example and illustrates how it developed a unique image culture that spread from the port city of Yokohama to Europe, the US, and Australia. Lastly, Arianna Dagnino’s paper “Global Mobility, Transcultural Literature, and Multiple Modes of Modernity” suggests that the literature of the early twenty-first century is marked by a transcultural sensibility and that those works that, together with their authors, are intrinsically border crossers have been able to go beyond the limits of any one culture or national landscape.

Initiated in 2010, Transcultural Studies is published by the Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe in a Global Context" at Heidelberg University and hosted by the University Library of the same institution. This peer-reviewed, open-access journal is committed to promoting the knowledge and research of "transculturality" in all disciplines. The articles are enhanced with images and links to audio-, video-, or other internet-sources to make full use of the multimedia-based publishing options of an e-journal. The journal's editors are Rudolf G. Wagner and Monica Juneja and its managing editor is Andrea Hacker.
