Conference on Leisure and Social Change

Leisure and social change was the topic of an international conference organized by Prof. Dr. Rudolf G. Wagner. The event was held at the Karl Jaspers Centre for Advanced Transcultural Studies from January 10 to 11, 2014.

The conference covered three different areas: The first session focused on the topic "Leisure and Money". Speakers included Eugenio Menegon, Rudolf G. Wagner, Yu-Chih Lai in the morning and in the afternoon Nancy Smith-Hefner, Robert Weller and Christopher Lehrich. The second session on "Leisure and Gender" included talks by Barbara Mittler, Sarah Frederick and Christian Henriot. In the afternoon session, Catherine Yeh, Timothy Oakes and Eileen Cheng-Yin Chow presented different papers on "Leisure and the State".

The conference "Leisure and Social Change: The Dynamics of the Transcultural Flow of Concepts, Institutions and Practices of Leisure across Asia" was organized by Rudolf G. Wagner. The renowned sinologist and former co-director of the Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe in a Global Context" now researches in Heidelberg and Harvard. In particular, he is strongly involved in the interdisciplinary research group MC5 "Global Concepts" and coordinates project MC5.3 "Translingual Concepts".

The conference was sponsored by the CCK Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange, and co-sponsored by the Center for the Study of Asia at Boston University and the Cluster.
