Cluster holds General Meeting

Oct 16, 2014

On Thursday afternoon, the Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe in a Global Context" held its General Meeting at the Karl Jaspers Centre for Advanced Transcultural Studies.

In the Report of the Acting Director, Prof. Joseph Maran reviewed the main activities and events of the past few months, ranging from a large exhibition to two summer schools and the Annual Conference, which attracted more than 150 scholars from Heidelberg and around the world. He also emphasized the new cooperations with the universities of Hyderdabad, Westminster, Kyoto and Tokyo. As a result, students and doctoral candidates can much easier study or research abroad. Furthermore, Prof. Maran introduced some of the new publications of Cluster members and announced a new issue of the Cluster's E-Journal Transcultural Studies.

Co-Director Prof. Axel Michaels reported about an important meeting organised by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the German Science Council (WR) in Bad Honnef in early October. Under the guiding question "Excellence Initiative - and then?", representatives of more than 100 institutions discussed the general conditions and perspectives of the Excellence Initiative.

Subsequently, the new members to the Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe" as well as the Heidelberg Centre for Transcultural Studies (HCTS) were welcomed. In total, about 30 scholars have joined during the past few months and there are many more to come. In particular, the research projects attract many Visiting Fellows at the moment. Also many scholars from the Cluster have been awarded fellowships and various awards from other institutions.

Finally, Prof. Maran invited the Cluster members to a number of upcoming events ranging from lectures to excursions. The next General Meeting will take place in February 2014. The General Meeting is a major event at the Cluster, because all members come together and exchange important information.
