Jul 24, 2014

On Thursday evening, the Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe in a Global Context" held its General Meeting at the Karl Jaspers Centre for Advanced Transcultural Studies.

After a short welcome by Acting Director Prof. Axel Michaels, the Cluster members held elections for the Research Area Speakers and their Deputy Speakers. Subsequently, Prof. Michaels informed about the latest news and developments. He introduced new books in the Cluster book series and the latest issue of the E-Journal Transcultural Studies. After a short review on the activities of the summer term, which began with the opening ceremony of the Heidelberg Centre for Transcultural Studies (HCTS) and the start of its fellowship programme, Prof. Michaels showed a virtual tour through the future Centre for Asian and Transcultural Studies (CATS). The new campus will be constructed in the next years adjacent to the Karl Jaspers Centre.

Further, new members of the Cluster introduced themselves and new projects and awards were announced. Finally, Prof. Michaels informed about the upcoming events in the next months: The Summer School "Politics of Near Futures" (July 27-31) that features a keynote lecture by Prof. Akhil Gupta on Monday, July 28, at 5 pm; the Summer School "Colloqial Tibetan" (August 4-27), the Annual Conference "Cultural Mediation" (October 8-10), and the exhibition "Von Atlantis bis heute - Mensch. Natur. Katastrophe" (September 7 - March 1) at the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museen Mannheim.

The meeting ended with a short introduction by Prof. Joseph Maran, who will take up the position of the Acting Director in the winter term. He thanked Prof. Michaels for his work and contribution. In the winter term, Prof. Axel Michaels will be doing research in Nepal and Prof. Barbara Mittler will be in the United States on sabbatical leave.

The General Meeting is a major event at the Cluster, because all members come together and exchange important information. The General Meeting is held at the beginning and at the end of every semester.

The next General Meeting will be held in October.
