Cluster holds General Meeting

Jul 25, 2013

On Thursday evening, the Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe in a Global Context" held its General Meeting at the Karl Jaspers Centre for Advanced Transcultural Studies.

After a short welcome by Acting Director Prof. Thomas Maissen, the Cluster held elections for a new Director, a new Research Area D Deputy Speaker, and new members of the Steering Committee. Subsequently, new members introduced themselves. Prof. Maissen introduced the new ombudsman Prof. Tonio Hölscher. As an ombudsman he will be the confidential person for everybody having something on his or her mind, whatever it may be. Also, if a conflict can't be solved by the ones involved, they are invited to get in contact with Prof. Hölscher.

During his report, the Acting Director informed the Cluster members about the auditions for the new Start-Up Professors that took place on the same day. He also reported about the realisation of the Centre for Asian and Transcultural Studies (CATS) and the Heidelberg Centre for Transcultural Studies (HCTS) that started its Fellowship Programme. PD. Dr. Antje Flüchter as representative of the Junior Researchers encouraged young scholars to engage in co-teaching, that could be conducted by a PhD student and a postdoc together. Further the junior scholars are invited to plan events such as reading classes or retreats together. Eric Decker gave a report about the recent developments of the Heidelberg Research Architecture (HRA). Furthermore, new publications, fundings and scholarships for Cluster members were announced. Among others, Prof. Christiane Brosius rejected a call for a Professorship at the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland, and Prof. Maissen expressed his happiness about her decision to stay Professor of Visual and Media Anthropology at the Cluster.

The main upcoming events are the Summer School from August 4 to 8 and the Annual Conference from October 9 to 11.

The General Meeting ended with a hearty farewell to Prof. Thomas Maissen and PD Dr. Antje Flüchter. Thomas Maissen will leave the Cluster to become Director of the German Historical Institute in Paris, and Antje Flüchter will go to Norway and become Chair at the University of Oslo. Prof. Barbara Mittler, who succeeds Prof. Maissen as the Acting Director, gave a farewell speech and Prof. Axel Michaels handed over farewell presents. They expressed a warm thank-you to the ones who are leaving.

The General Meeting is a major event at the Cluster, because all members come together and exchange important information. The General Meeting is held at the beginning and at the end of every semester.
