Cluster holds Annual Conference 2013

Oct 09, 2013

The Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe in a Global Context" holds its fifth Annual Conference from October 9 to 11, 2013. This year’s theme is "Managing Empires. Cooperation, Competition, Conflict". The conference is organised by Research Area A "Governance & Administration".

About 150 scholars from Heidelberg and around the world participate in the lectures and panel discussions of this year’s conference. The conference features two keynote lectures: Prof. Michael Broers (Oxford University) spoke on "Nuestras Indias? The European Origins of European Colonialism: Cultural Imperialism in the First Napoleonic Empire and the Subaltern Europe", and Prof. Carol Gluck (Columbia University) gives a talk with the title "Modernity in Common: Japan and World History".

The conference consists of plenary panels in the morning devoted to broader themes around the subject of the conference, and a number of smaller, parallel afternoon panels, mirroring the wide-ranging research in the cross-regional and transdisciplinary setting of the Cluster. The topics of the four morning panels range from "Imagining Administration", "Chinese Whispers: A shared Eurasian Imaginaire of Professional Bureaucracy?", "Global Elites. Rootless Cosmopolitanism or Provincial Jet-Setters?" to "Agency in Modern 'Empires'".

The conference was opened on October 9 at 6:30 pm at the Alte Aula of Heidelberg University with an official welcome by the Cluster's Acting Director Prof. Barbara Mittler, followed by Prof. Michael Broer's keynote lecture. The second keynote lecture by Prof. Carol Gluck will be held on October 10 at 6:30 pm at the Karl Jaspers Centre, Heidelberg. The morning and afternoon panels and the concluding session with plenary round table take place at the Karl Jaspers Centre, Heidelberg.

The Annual Conference 2013 "Managing Empires. Cooperation, Competition, Conflict" of the Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe in a Global Context" is organised by Prof. Dr. Diamantis Panagiotopoulos and researchers from Research Area A "Governance & Administration": Prof. Dr. Harald Fuess, PD Dr. Susan Richter, David Mervart (PhD) and Sebastian Meurer.
