Call for Panels: Early Modern Period Conference

Jul 11, 2014

The organisers of the 11th conference of the working group on the early modern period in the Association of German Historians are inviting scholars to submit panel proposals. The conference will take place in September 2015 in Heidelberg. It is organized by the Chair for the Early Modern Period of the Department of History in cooperation with the Cluster "Asia & Europe".

The conference entitled „Globale Verflechtungen – Europa neu denken“ („Rethinking Early Modern Europe in a Global Perspective“) would like to present a wide view over current fields of research, taking into account the increased significance of global and world history approaches in recent years. At the same time, the conference wishes to ask for a possible synthesis. Do we need a new master narrative for “Europe in the Early Modern Period”? It is a key aim of the conference to question existing European self-perceptions and narratives, opening them up for debate. Which different interpretations are possible? Which aspects need to be considered, when regarding Europe from a global perspective? Following from all these questions, methodological reflections need to be made. Can approaches to research like, for instance, entangled history, world history, or global history be considered fruitful? Which additional benefit can concepts like „transculturality“ or „third spaces” provide for the research on the early modern period? What are their limits?

Panels should consist of two to a maximum of four speakers as well as one discussant. The conference will comprise panels in German and English. Panel proposals should be send by 11th August 2014 via Email to fruehneuzeittag@zegk.uni-heidelberg.de and include an abstract (maximum of 2000 characters), information regarding the speakers and discussants, and an approximate calculation of travel expenses. For questions please contact PD Dr. Susan Richter (head organiser) or Sebastian Meurer (programme coordinator).
