Call for Panels: Annual Conference 2014

Feb 12, 2014

The organisers of the Annual Conference invite scholars to submit panel proposals. The theme of this year's conference is "Cultural Mediation: Creativity, Performance, Display". The conference will take place from October 8-10 in Heidelberg, and is being organised by Research Area B "Public Spheres".

This year’s Annual Conference will evolve around the topic of “Cultural Mediation”, exploring the many ways through which cultural practice in its widest sense is translated, negotiated and interwoven. The conference will highlight how individuals, collectives or institutions constitute, appropriate or alter and recontextualise cultural goods or processes across time and space. Looking closely at these navigations, panels will address the role and importance of mediation, or brokerage, as nodes and expressions of creativity, performance and exhibition. Panellists are encouraged to focus on spaces and practices, objects and agents of cultural contact, exchange and translation, and how such a multiperspectival approach enables the study of ‘production’ and ‘trading’ of cultures.

The conference will consist of two segments: two plenary panels in the morning devoted to broader themes around the subject of the conference, while the afternoon segment will feature parallel panels and individual papers designed to present findings of the wide-ranging research carried out by the Cluster “Asia and Europe”. Particularly young researchers from the Cluster are encouraged to use this platform. Also panel applications suggesting invited guests are appreciated (please note that the number of guests funded by the Cluster is limited). Apart from the usual panel-structure, we encourage creative formats as suggested by our conference topic (e.g., practitioners as panel members).

Applications should include the title of the panel, an abstract (max. 300 words), and a preliminary list of speakers (inhouse and external). Submissions for panels are accepted until April 15, 2014 and should be sent to annualconference@asia-europe.uni-heidelberg.de.

Besides the panels, the conference will feature two keynote lectures. One will be given by Prof. Dr. Erika Fischer-Lichte, Director of the Institute of Theatre Studies and the Research Centre ‘Interweaving Performance Cultures’ in Berlin.

The Annual Conference of the Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe in a Global Context" will take place from October 8-10, 2014, at Heidelberg University. It is organised by Prof. Christiane Brosius, Prof. Melanie Trede, and Prof. Hans Harder on behalf of Research Area B "Public Spheres".
