New Book on Rituals

Apr 29, 2013

A new publication on rituals is available. Edited by Prof. Christiane Brosius, Prof. Axel Michaels and Prof. Paula Schrode, the handbook represents ten years of research at the Collaborative Research Centre 619 "Ritual Dynamics".

The book "Ritual und Ritualdynamik - Schlüsselbegriffe, Theorien, Diskussionen" examines key terms, theories and discussions of rituals and the dynamics of rituals. It serves both as a handbook for students of culture studies and social sciences as well as for the interested general public. In total, it contains 28 articles - each about eight to twelve pages - on the most important aspects ranging from the terms "ritus" and "ritual" to "rituals and myths", "ritual object" and "ritual transfer".

The book is based on the results of Heidelberg University's Collaborative Research Centre 619 "Ritual Dynamics". The research facility was founded in 2002 by the German Research Foundation DFG. With 90 scholars from different disciplines, mostly from the field of humanities, it is the world's largest research association exclusively investigating rituals as well as their change and dynamics.

"Ritual und Ritualdynamik - Schlüsselbegriffe, Theorien, Diskussionen" was edited by Prof. Christiane Brosius (Visual and Media Anthropology), Prof. Axel Michaels (Classical Indologoy) and Prof. Paula Schrode (Islamic Studies). Further contributors include Prof. Gregor Ahn and Prof. Michael Bergunder (Religious Studies), Prof. Dietrich Harth (Literature Studies), Prof. Ron Grimes (Ritual Studies), Prof. Ute Hüsken (Indology), Dr. Henrik Jungaberle (Medical Psychology), Prof. Hanna Liss (Jewish Studies), Prof. Thomas Meier (Ancient History) and Prof. William S. Sax (Anthropology). The book - 240 pages - was published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht.

Prof. Christiane Brosius holds the Chair of Visual and Media Anthropology at the Cluster "Asia and Europe" and coordinated several projects at the Collaborative Research Centre 619 "Ritual Dynamics". Prof. Axel Michaels is Co-Director of the Cluster, Speaker of the Collaborative Research Centre and Head of the Department of Classical Indology at Heidelberg University's South Asia Institute. Paula Schrode is Professor for Religious Studies with focus on the Islam at the University of Bayreuth.
