Cluster / HCTS joins European Alliance for Asian Studies

The Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe in a Global Context" / Heidelberg Centre for Transcultural Studies (HCTS) has been invited to join the European Alliance for Asian Studies. The Cluster/HCTS will be represented by Prof. Dr. Christiane Brosius within the network. The European Alliance for Asian Studies is a co-operative framework of European institutes specialising in Asian Studies.

The aim of the European Alliance for Asian Studies (Asia Alliance), established in 1997, is to contribute to bringing together the fragmented forces in Europe on Asian Studies in order to establish scholarly excellence in central areas of research and expertise on Asia, to the benefit of the institutes' national research environments and the European community at large.

The co-operative framework consists of renowned institutes specializing in Asian Studies, including the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS, Leiden), German Institute of Global and Area Studies (GIGA, Hamburg), Nordic Institute of Asian Studies (NIAS, Copenhagen), Institut d'├ętudes politiques de Paris (Sciences Po, Paris), Centro de Estudios de Asia Oriental (CEAO, Madrid), and the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS, London).

Prof. Dr. Christiane Brosius (Chair of Visual and Media Anthropology) will represent the Cluster / HCTS within the alliance. At the next network meeting in May 2015 in Hamburg, collaborative issues such as faculty mobility and further strategies of networking will be explored. Collaboration will be with the directors of the initiating institutes the Asia Alliance, Dr. Philippe M.F. Peycam (IIAS), Dr. Geir  Helgesen (NIAS), and Prof. Dr. Patrick Koellner (GIGA).
