Appeal for Donations after Earthquakes in Kumamoto

May 03, 2016

Heidelberg’s sister city, Kumamoto in Japan, was hit by major earthquakes on April 14 and April 16. More than 40 people died and more than 1000 people were injured. For this reason, the Heidelberger Freundeskreis Kumamoto e.V. started an appeal for donations.

Several thousand houses and buildings were entirely destroyed or heavily damaged during the two earthquakes and various aftershocks not far from the city of Kumamoto. Tens of thousands of inhabitants had to flee their houses and were brought to emergency accommodations. A lot of houses were without power or running water. Only after a brief period of time drinking water ran short and food supplies couldn’t be guaranteed anymore since the infrastructure in and around the city was severely damaged. At the moment, the clearing up is in process at full power.

In order to support the people in Kumamoto in these difficult times, the Heidelberger Freundeskreis Kumamoto e.V., along with the Stadtjugendring Heidelberg e.V. and the city of Heidelberg started an appeal for donations. All the donations raised will be transferred from the city of Heidelberg to the city of Kumamoto.

The Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe” supports the Freundeskreis Kumamoto e.V. with this appeal for donations. If you would like to support the victims of the earthquakes, click here for more information.
