"Confucius Institute of the Year"

Dec 28, 2014

The Confucius Institute at Heidelberg University has been awarded the title "2014 Confucius Institute of the Year". The non-profit organisation is managed by Cluster member Petra Thiel together with Associate Professor Liu Nan.

The award honours the outstanding achievements of the institute ranging from language courses to various public events. In addition, the jury recognizes that the management has obtained external funds for additional scholarships and conferences. The title "Confucius Institute of the Year" is awarded annually to only a very few of the about 480 Confucius Institutes worldwide. The prize was presented during a ceremony in early December in Xiamen, China, to Prof. Dr. Dieter W. Heermann, Vice-Rector for International Affairs of Heidelberg University.

Founded in September 2009, the Confucius Institute at Heidelberg University offers a wide range of language courses for different target groups. In addition, it organises a number of events with a focus on Chinese history, culture and arts. As a result, the institute strongly contributes to a better understanding of China. In close cooperation with the Institute of Chinese Studies, it also supports the exchange of students, scholars and experts between Germany and China. The Confucius Institute at Heidelberg University is managed by Petra Thiel, former coordinator of the Cluster's research area B "Public Spheres" and a member of the research project B12 "Rethinking Trends", together with Assoc. Prof. Liu Nan from the Confucius Institute’s partner university in China, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Chair of the board of the development association is Prof. Dr. Barbara Mittler.
