Lecture Series on Global Concepts

Jan 25, 2011

On Thursday, 27th January, the last session of the Cluster's lecture series on “Global Concepts? Keywords and Their Histories in Asia and Europe” will be held on the key terms "Rationality/Emotion".

The lecture series consists of seven podium discussions with three renowned scholars each. The panels trace the semantic histories of a pair of keywords in more than one cultural context, and discuss issues such as semantic shifts and their consequences.

On Thursday, 27th January, 6-8 pm, "Rationality/Emotion" will be the subject of discussion: Dr. habil. Angelika C. Messner (University of Kiel, Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, Berlin) will talk about "Emotions and Sensivities in Chinese History" (Abstract). And Prof. Dr. Martina Kessel, (University of Bielefeld) will speak on "The Violent Ideal. Representations of Rationality/Emotion in the Modern German Imaginary" (Abstract). The discussant will be Dr. Iris Clemens (Free University Berlin).

The lecture series has been organised by Prof. Monica Juneja, Cluster Professor of Global Art History, Prof. Joachim Kurtz, Cluster Professor of Intellectual History, and Dr. Susan Richter, Junior Research Group Leader at the Cluster.

The Cluster's lecture series is held from October 2010 until January 2011 at the Karl Jaspers Centre for Advanced Transcultural Studies, room 212. The full programme is available here
