Taking Offense. Religion, Art, and Visual Culture in Plural Configurations

What makes an image, a performance or an object offensive? The roundtable engages with this question that forms the subject of the volume Taking Offense, eds. Christiane Kruse, Birgit Meyer and Anne-Marie Korte (Paderborn; Leiden: Wilhelm Fink/E.J. Brill, 2018).

In pluralistic societies around the world images continue to trigger heated controversies. The essays in the book (Table of Contents attached) explore these tensions and conflicts in various contexts, in and beyond Europe and from a range of disciplinary perspectives.  The studies brought together focus on images that are perceived as insulting or offensive; those subject to taboos and restrictions; or those that are condemned as blasphemous. How is the relation between regimes of visibility in art, journalism, politics and religion negotiated in plural settings?

The roundtable, organized by the Chair of Global Art History, will bring together three contributors to the book and two scholars from Heidelberg to think further on these and related questions.

We look forward to your participation!
