Lecture: "Ikonographien der Macht: Die Kunst des Vergleichs"

Apr 28, 2019 04:30 pm to 06:30 pm
Organiser: Völkerkundemuseum VPST, CATS
Völkerkundemuseum VPST, Haputstrasse 235, 69117 Heidelberg

Speaker: Prof. Barbara Mittler, centre of East Asian Studies.

Abstract:

Transcultural comparison allows us to revitalize specific disciplinary and regional knowledge, as we are engaging with unfamiliar perspectives from other disciplines and regions, thus “unmastering” unquestioned certitudes of disciplinary or regional expertise to generate innovative ways of seeing what only appear to be well-known worlds (Radhakrishan 2009; Anderson 2016). Through global juxtapositions and reading-in-conjunction of sources from different regions and fields compels us to ask questions about, say, iconic figures such as Mao and Gandhi, global heroes (or villains), that we have not been inclined to ask before, when they have been dealt with as objects of singular national, rather than, transculturally comparative and global histories.

The lecture will be held in the context of the vernissage of the exhibition "Envisioning Asia: Gandhi and Mao in the Photographs of Walter Bosshard", taking place at the Völkerkundemuseum VPST Heidelberg from April 28, 2019 to June 10, 2019. For more information about the full program, visit here.

Please note that the lecture will be in German.
