A Mongolian Perspective on Shifts in Northeast Asia

The world is starting at the Korean peninsula in disbelief and with many questions. One of the longest-term question is whether the current rapprochement may signal renewed interest in Northeast Asia as a region. If that is the case, Mongolia has all the incentives to contribute and accelerate this process. By the same token and its unique relationship with North Korea, Mongolia has much to offer to Europe as a link with an emerging Northeast Asia.

Julian Dierkes is a sociologist who has followed an institutional perspective on policy-making in such areas as educational policy in Japan and mining policy in Mongolia. For the past dozen years, he has been conducting research in Mongolia that focuses on democratization, social change, and economic development. He maintains an active blog focused on an analysis of contemporary Mongolia, Mongolia Focus (http://blogs.ubc.ca/mongolia) Follow him @jdierkes
