Prof. Rajan Gurukkal, Professor Emeritus & Director, School of Social Sciences, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, (1988-2008), Vice Chancellor, Mahatma Gandhi University (2008 – 2012), former Invited Professor at Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociale, Paris (2006), is currently Soundararajan Chair Visiting Professor at the Centre for Contemporary Studies, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, and Chairman of the Kerala State Higher Education Council Commission.

His research focuses on the history, theory and political economy of knowledge production in India, but also on the exchange relations between the Eastern Mediterranean and the Indian subcontinent (so-called “Indo-Roman trade”).

His latest books are Social Formations of Early South India, Oxford University Press, New Delhi 2010, and Rethinking Classical Indo-Roman Trade, Oxford University Press, New Delhi 2016.
