Metadata from Scratch

Feb 11, 2014 02:00 pm to 04:00 pm
Organizer: HRA Training

Recent developments in computing and its new opportunities of collaborative research demand heightened attention of the humanities for key issues such as digitalization, data storage and the sustainable organization of computable information about cultural artifacts (text, film, artworks, etc.) as well as cultural phenomena related to those artifacts. One core aspect hereby is metadata as a way to describe those objects of scientific interest.

Considering its sometimes enigmatic aura, the session’s first half offers a demystifying talk about the characteristics of metadata, that is: what they are, what they do and what they are good for. As a combination of theory and practice, participants will be guided through a hands-on workshop in the second part to deepen their understanding as metadata may be of great importance for the participants’ own research questions.

This session will be held by Johannes Alisch
