Opening of the Summer School "Knowledge on the Move"

This Monday saw the beginning of the Summer School 2010. It was opened by the Cluster's Acting Director Prof. Dr. Axel Michaels and the Summer School's organiser Prof. Dr. Joachim Kurtz. A highlight was the keynote lecture by Prof. Rivka Feldhay from Tel Aviv University.

First of all, Prof. Dr. Joachim Kurtz, Cluster Professor for Intellectual History, introduced the Summer School's topic "Knowledge on the Move". Then, the Cluster's Acting Director Prof. Dr. Axel Michaels gave an overview of the Cluster's development and its research activities.

After that, the microphone was handed over to the participants to introduce themselves. The 28 participants at this year's Summer School come from 15 countries including China, Taiwan and New Zealand.

The keynote lecture was held by Prof. Rivka Feldhay from Tel Aviv University. Under the title "Migrating Knowledge: An Epistemic-Political Stance", her topic focused on Russian migrants in Israel during the 20th and 21st century.

The keynote lecture was followed by two more talks: First, Prof. Dhruv Raina from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, spoke on the Dialogue between Jesuit Missionaries and Jai Singh's Astronomers in India. Secondly, Prof. Henrique Leitao from Lisbon University talked about the Instruments and Techniques of Sailors and Missionaries during the Portuguese Maritime Expansion.

In the evening, the participants visited the old town of Heidelberg.

The Summer School "Knowledge on the Move" is being run by the Cluster "Asia and Europe" at the Karl Jaspers Centre for Advanced Transcultural Studies from 25th to 29th July 2010. The programme includes lectures, seminars and workshops.
