Jour Fixe on Perceptions of the Chinese

Research areas A “Governance and Administration” and B “Public Spheres” jointly invited to the Jour Fixe on Thursday afternoon at the Karl Jaspers Centre. The guest speaker was Prof. Don J. Wyatt of Middlebury College.

“How a Once-White People Turned Yellow: The Chinese as Self-Perceived and Perceived by Others at the Dawn of European Contact” was the topic of the talk by Professor Wyatt. He is John M McCardell, Jr. Distinguished Professor at Middlebury College in Vermont. Graduated from Beloit College and Harvard University, he specialised in East Asian History and Philosophy. In his current research he addresses the formation of racial identities in China from ancient to early modern times. Additionally, Wyatt is the editor of the “Journal of Song-Yuan Studies.”

The Jour Fixe took place on Thursday 26th January 2012, from 4 to 6 pm at the Karl Jaspers Centre for Advanced Transcultural Studies, room 212.

Additionally, Professor Wyatt will give a seminar on the same topic on Friday, 27th January 2012 from 9 to 11 am at the Karl Jaspers Centre, room 212. If you would like to participate, kindly contact Petra Thiel.

The events are jointly organised by research area A “Governance and Administration”, chaired by Prof. Thomas Maissen, and research area B “Public Spheres”, chaired by Prof. Barbara Mittler. The Jour Fixe is a regular event of the Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe in a Global Context", always organised by different research areas.
