Cluster announces Annual Conference

The Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe in a Global Context” will hold its second Annual Conference from October 6 to 8, 2010. This year’s theme is “The Flow of Concepts and Institutions”.

More than 150 scholars from all over the world are expected to participate in the conference. Among the speakers are British historian Prof. Quentin Skinner and Indian political scientist Prof. Sobhanlal Datta Gupta.

The programme includes four podium discussions on two different topics: “Conceptualising Governance” and “Conceptualising Religiosity”. There will be simultaneous panel sessions on various issues such as politics, secret service, health care, art, and archaeology.

The highlights will be the two keynote lectures: Quentin Skinner (London) will speak about “European Visions of Liberty: A Genealogy” and Sobhanlal Datta Gupta (Kolkata) about “Marxism, modernity and revolution: The Asian experience”. Another remarkable event will see the premiere of  Deepali Gaur Singh’s  documentary film on the Afghan Diaspora in Germany.

The podium discussions in the morning will take place at the German-American Institute Heidelberg (Sofienstraße 12); the afternoon discussions will be held at the Karl Jaspers Centre for Advanced Transcultural Studies (Voßstraße 2).

This year’s Annual Conference has been organised by Prof. Subrata K. Mitra, speaker of research area A “Governance and Administration” at the Cluster of Excellence, Dr. Antje Flüchter, leader of junior research group A9 "Cultural Transfer", and Dr. Jivanta Schoettli, assistant coordinator of research area A "Governance and Administration".
