Workshop in Egypt on Caricatures
Mar 25, 2011
Research project B1 "Satire" held a workshop on "Caricatures as Transcultural Media of Political and Social Propaganda" in Egypt from March 24 to 26, 2011.
Under the title "The Power of the Image - Caricatures as Transcultural Media of Political and Social Propaganda in the Era of Imperialism and Colonialism", scholars from all over the globe discussed the phenomenon of caricatures as a transcultural format. Furthermore, the characteristics of caricature as a carrier of moral advice and political propaganda were explored. The workshop aimed to establish a transcultural approach to the phenomenon of caricature.
The workshop was held at the only Caricature Museum in the Arab Middle East located in Fayoum, Egypt, from March 24-26, 2011. It was organised by the research project B1 "Satire", supervised by Prof. Dr. Hans Harder, in collaboration with the Fayoum Art Centre, Egypt. The workshop was coordinated by Eliane Ettmüller, who is currently reporting from Egypt in her blog "Egyptian Letters".
