CfA: Heidelberg-Tohoku Joint Doctoral Degree Programme

As part of the Heidelberg-Tohoku Joint Doctoral Degree Programme, doctoral candidates in Asian and Transcultural Studies at Heidelberg University are eligible to apply for a one-year doctoral scholarship starting in October 2020 to study at the Graduate School of Law at Tohoku University.

Emily Graf receives Ruprecht-Karls prize for dissertation

Emily Mae Graf, former member of the Graduate Programme for Transcultural Studies, was awarded the Ruprecht-Karls-Prize for her doctoral dissertation “Lu Xun on Display: Memory, Space and Media in the Making of World Literary Heritage”. The award ceremony took place on November 9, 2019 in the Alte Aula of Heidelberg University.

Michael Falser publishes volume on Angkor Wat

Former HCTS research member PD Dr. Michael Falser published a monograph in two volumes on the historic trajectories of the 12th-century Cambodian temple of Angkor Wat. The book “Angkor Wat. A Transcultural History of Heritage,” published with De Gruyter, locates the famous archaeological site in a transcultural perspective of investigation. 

Sophie Roche publishes book on jihad in Tajikistan

Dr. Sophie Roche, former research group leader and associate member at the HCTS, published the volume "The Faceless Terrorist. A Study of Critical Events in Tajikistan." It is based on an ethnographic project that examines the jihad in text and context using a biographical approach, and addresses the relationships between concepts and experiences in a Transcultural frame.

The HCTS welcomes new MATS students

A new generation of Master students has arrived at the Heidelberg centre for Transcultural Studies (HCTS) to pursue the Master’s in Transcultural Studies (MATS). Orientation days took place on October 9-10 at the Karl Jaspers Centre, introducing students to the structure, regulations and study foci of the programme.

Winter semester 19/20: Lecture series "Ambivalent Enmity"

The Heidelberg Centre for Transcultural Studies (HCTS) is cooperating with the Hochschule für Jüdische Studien Heidelberg in the winter semester 2019/20 for the lecture series "Ambivalent Enmity," which takes place on Thursdays at 6 pm at the Centre for Asian and Transcultural Studies.

Prof. Rudolf G. Wagner, founding director of the Cluster "Asia and Europe in a Global Context," passed away on October 25, 2019.
