Karl Jaspers Centre for Advanced Transcultural Studies

The Karl Jaspers Centre for Advanced Transcultural Studies (KJC) is the central institution for the Cluster's work and collaboration. With its manifold facilities and infrastructure it houses a podium and a meeting place for the following forms of cooperation:

  • A Centre of Advanced Studies ("Wissenschaftskolleg") inspiring research fellows to create an intellectually stimulating research atmosphere (professors, junior researchers, visiting fellows)
  • Junior Research Groups to build up long-term interdisciplinary teams of young researchers integrated in the faculties' teaching programmes
  • Research Teams focusing on specific scientific themes and objectives, without formal structure established according to scientific needs
  • Assemblies of the Research Areas
  • Annual Conferences
  • Regular Summer Schools in order to train the Cluster's members and graduate students from abroad in new methodologies and techniques.
  • Equipment to house Junior Research Groups, PhD students, and Visiting Fellows for their studies and meetings.

The centre is named after Karl Jaspers (1883-1969), a German philosopher and psychiatrist, who studied and taught at Heidelberg University. Originally trained in medicine his interest covered many disciplines such as psychology, psychiatry, and philosophy. He became professor at the Department of Philosophy in Heidelberg in the 1920s. After World War II he emigrated to Switzerland. A website at Heidelberg University presents renowned alumni such as Karl Jaspers with short portraits (in German).
